About us

The Centre for Low Carbon Futures

Hosted at the University of Birmingham, the Centre for Low Carbon Futures is a university membership organisation that focuses on sustainability for competitive advantage. Formed by the University of Birmingham, University of Hull, University of Leeds, University of Sheffield and University of York, our projects are focused on the UK and fast growing economies in Asia and Latin America, supporting national governments and industry with evidence-based reseach and delivery of game-changing technologies.

How we work:

We work closely with national and local governments, development banks, public agencies and industry, providing evidence-based research supporting the mobilisation of international climate and private sector finance. Our research is conducted across our member and international partner universities, providing both intellectual leadership, knowledge transfer and capacity building. Our activities are further supported through a proactive dissemination process, providing key research insights through high value networks and global fora, including learned societies, embassy networks, Rio+20, UNFCCC and by supporting government to government dialogues on innovation, science and technology.

To date, our research activities have included a broad range of energy-related low emission technologies, spanning technologies of carbon capture in the UK and China to policy aspects of energy intensive industries; opportunities for energy storage and carbon utilisation; improved breeding of crops to impacts of drought on major food crops. During 2012 and 2013 we implemented a number of city scale projects in the UK, India and Peru, growing activities to Malaysia and Indonesia in 2013 - 2014. CLCF supported two major technology demonstrators on CCS and energy storage and commenced an energy project in Korea.
