Jonathan Radcliffe

Acting Centre Director and Programme Director, Energy Storage

Dr Jonathan Radcliffe is Acting Centre Director and Energy Storage Programme Director for the Centre for Low Carbon Futures (CLCF) and Senior Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham.

Jonathan is establishing a new energy storage centre based at the University of Birmingham, working with CLCF colleagues in the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield, Hull and York.The centre covers technology development, demonstration activities and policy/market analysis; working with a wide set of industry and policy stakeholders, in the UK and internationally. His research position at Birmingham is jointly held between the engineering and business schools, focusing on policy, regulation and techno-economic analysis to enable the deployment of energy storage.

Jonathan is co-Director of a new £12m facility being created at Birmingham for research into cryogenic energy storage, and co-Director of the EPSRC Energy Storage Supergen Hub which will commence in 2014. He has current projects with Research Councils, the Technology Strategy Board and Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Previously Jonathan was Head of the Analysis Team for the UK's Energy Research Partnership leading its work on energy storage and flexibility options for the energy system. He has also covered analysis of energy system scenarios and an assessment of the UK's engagement in international energy innovation activities.

Jonathan studied physics at Imperial College and Cambridge, worked for several years on atmospheric modeling at the UK's Met Office, before moving into science and innovation policy in posts around Government and Parliament. He worked with the Prime Minister's Council for Science and Technology and the House of Lords Science and Technology Select Committee.
