The Lima-Callao area has a population of 9 million andan economy worth US$66 billion in 2014. The preliminary results of our research indicate that the total energy bill for the city was US$4.7 billion and that the bill for waste and water was US$50 billion - meaning that 8% of everything earned in the local economy was spent on energy, water and waste.

Omar completed his Masters degree in Environment and Sustainable Development at University College London in 2011 with his research dissertation focusing on the social impacts of carbon offsetting projects in Brazil. During his postgraduate study he travelled to Africa to study the water, sanitation and food nexus in conjunction with the International Water Management Institute and Resources Centre for Urban Agriculture and Food Security.
He recently spent a year living and working in Latin America as a teacher before moving into an environmental consultancy post in Spain where he focused on implementing energy efficiency increases and improving clients' understanding of current environmental legislation.
Working across our 5 partner universities, he is responsible for identifying funding opportunities for innovative research and for working with academic teams through the bid writing process. He is contributing to ongoing research on CO2 recyling, modular nuclear reactors, energy efficiency and storage.
Omar has a working knowledge of Spanish and also holds a Bachelors degree (BA (Hons)) in Environmental Studies with Transport Planning from the University of Leeds.
